Sewing Progress: The Sweetheart Dress

Before I get my sewing day started today, I wanted to update with progress on some designs I'm working on. I'm actually almost done with my first run of the Sweetheart Dress which from here on out, will be only in other prints as I only had about 3 yards of this vintage print. This design will be available on Etsy in September but with another fun print I have not yet found.


Currently, only the front is pinned to the dressform just to check. The waistline will be more gathered once I get the elastic in it. This is an original design by me. I completed the patterns in about 3 hours on Sunday, cut the fabric, and went into sewing it all on the same day. That's technically a lot of work, but I work fast now!

 The side here needs additional pressing, but you get the idea. I went ahead and used the orange/yellow with the pink combo instead of using only pink like everyone was directing me about a month or so ago. I LOVE it. No regrets about it!

 So I haven't dyed my hair in about 3 months now (and it was medium golden brown color). I can't even see the roots. I'm surprised it's this bright, really. My hair has always been quite reddish and sunlight only brings it out more. In this instance, I think it's the lighting in this room. Whatever.

 I am OBSESSED with this print! I have enough to make some kind of top with it, so I think I will someday just for me.

Overall, I was in the sewing room for about 9 hours with pattern making, cutting, and a little bit of sewing on Sunday. I'm wearing my self-designed, self-printed, hand-dyed Cloud Dress which I made last year.

I'm planning on about 8 hours today including completion of this dress and actually, I might be doing more pattern making than sewing anything as I need to buy fabric for the other designs on my line sheet.

      I got it at this vintage boutique that was closing in the neighborhood I work in. It was much more expensive than I normally pay for fabric (even with a discount!), but I had to have it. I think there was about 3 yards total, though I never measured.

Latch Hook Rug Update

A little under a month ago I received all of my supplies to take on one of the biggest long-term projects I have ever taken on - a self-designed latch hook rug. DIY Trapeze Dress

I'm a pretty big fan of tent dresses (or trapeze dresses - call it what you want). They're simple, easy-to-make and you can have many variations of them. These are a fun style to wear for spring and summer!  See this DIY from a Good Housekeeping Crafts book from 1971 - photos at the end of my own trapeze top from a while ago! (Bear with me on the photos here - this book is quite cumbersome and hard to scan.)  Applique patterns, in case you wanted the dress to look EXACTLY like the photo. (But why?)  How to cut the fabric efficiently. (This is actually pretty important cost-wise for you - especially with something this big.)  Using pattern instructions from my patternmaking book from college, I created this swingy trapeze top a bit ago. How Print on Demand Sites Helped Me! And Pros and Cons

I don't know about you, but I don't always have a ton of time.  Well, ok -- maybe that was before the pandemic hit. But one of the things I have learned over time being a designer of sorts and loving fashion design was that it seemed I never had enough time to do/make everything I wanted to have available within a product line to sell. Especially not when I was working a full-time job either!  Bags! Shoes! And yeah, duh -- clothing! It seemed most of my friends who are designers made all of their own items from scratch on their machines and I just didn't want to sit at my machine after working 40+ hours a week. Maybe for myself only but not as a side hustle. But I always had requests from people - "Can you make me something?
